About OCRF
Mission and Vision
The Ocean Research Facility (OCRF) supports interdisciplinary ocean science research and education at HKUST, as well as the local scientific community. OCRF provides equipment, a seawater system, aquarium facilities, and technical support for lab and field experiments. Its missions are to: (1) centralize research equipment and services, (2) support multidisciplinary marine and ocean science education and research, and (3) foster research collaborations.
Features of Lab
OCRF provides a comprehensive suite of equipment essential for investigating physical, biological, chemical, and ecological processes in both coastal and open ocean environments. The equipment supports seawater, sediment and plankton sampling, in situ monitoring of oceanographic conditions, cultivation of marine microbes, observation of biological specimens, and molecular and chemical sample analysis.
Located on the ground floor of OCRF is a flow-through seawater system featuring a mesocosm alongside an array of tanks and water tables. The mesocosm is equipped with temperature, light, pH and salinity controls, enabling researchers to simulate diverse marine environmental conditions and study how organisms respond to natural and human-induced stressors, such as heat waves, ocean acidification, and hypoxia. Flow-through tanks, supplied directly with fresh seawater from the sea adjacent to the HKUST campus, maintain marine organisms in near-natural conditions. These organisms are primarily used for research and laboratory courses at HKUST.
